Villa Romana Al Casale & Caltagirone Ceramic Tour

This private tour of Piazza Armerina is led by a local archaeologist, and includes the visit of the 4th century C.E. Villa Romana at Casale, UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Evidence suggests that the villa probably belonged to a senator or an imperial procurator, and that it probably functioned as a center of administrative power for the surrounding territories. The villa contains the greatest complex of Roman mosaics in the world, an astounding 3500 square meters of splendid mosaic pavements depicting athletes, splendid hunting scenes, circus games, mythological animals, and much more. Next we drive to Caltagirone, a small Baroque town renowned for its ceramics. Allow some free time to shop in one of the many craft shops found on the famous Scala di Santa Maria del Monte, with its 142 steps covered in ceramic tiles. The tour includes also a visit inside the marvelous Cathedral of San Giuliano and the church of San Giuseppe.
